Motorcycle enthusiasts will be thrilled that there's now a show just for them. And, reports BRENT DAVISON, there's action galore at the upcoming Sydney Olympic Park event.
Once upon a time the Sydney Motor Show had an impressive bike section but the increasing demands of the car industry and the finite size of the Darling Harbour exhibition centre meant something had to give. And something did give with the bike importers, distributors and retailers divorcing themselves from the motor show and moving out to start their own show at Sydney Olympic Park. A bit of a gamble initially, it was one that paid off with more exhibition space allowing for more product to be shown by more manufacturers and room for a number of action displays that simply could not be contemplated at Darling Harbour. Which means this year's show (November 24) boasts hundreds of bikes running the full range of everything from cute scooters to hairy-chested quads with a battalion of offroaders, cruisers, sports bikes and nakeds filling in the spaces. One eye-catching display will feature a one-off custom Yamaha R1 (pictured on the cover), yellow on one side and blue on the other with artwork by Brown's Grafix, in tribute MotoGP rider Valentino Rossi. As well, there are displays of aftermarket products, bike accessories, fashions and a range of bike-related services. Yamaha has a stunt team performing in the Action Arena with riders Matt Mingay, Matt McFerran, Steve Mini and Robbie Marshall doing the honours. The Sherco trials team will also be on hand to demonstrate true precision riding. For those who like their bikes big, brawny and different the show is also the final of the East Coast Custom Australian Custom Bike Championship. The show is open from 9am until 8pm on Friday, November 2 and Saturday, November 3 and from 9am until 6pm on Sunday, November 4. Admission charges are $16 for adults, $10 for children (five-15), $39 for families (two adults and two children) and $12 for seniors.
